Johnson City Evolves

Thanks to the Johnson City Press for including an article about Evolution Sunday!

ELIZABETHTON — Evolution Sunday, part of the Clergy Letter Project, will be observed this week at First Presbyterian Church, 119 W. F St.

The theme will be “Learning the Ancestor’s Tale,” the church said in a release. Ancestors who are a part of evolutionary history will be honored.

Evolution Sunday is designed to demonstrate that religion and science can be compatible.

According to the release, one important goal is to elevate the quality of the debate of this issue. A second critical goal is to demonstrate that religious people from many faiths and locations understand evolution is sound science and that it poses no problems for their faith. Finally, the event wishes to make clear that those claiming people must choose between religion and science are creating a false dichotomy.

A total of 830 congregations from all 50 states are scheduled to participate in the event.

I am not exactly sure how we are going to honor "ancestors who are part of evolutionary history" but I heard rumors that our deacons have made some chocolate trilobites for our reception following worship.

P.S. Blame Snad for the this pic that will adorn our bulletin cover.
